Badgers game day, Halloween on the Near West Side, and a 40th anniversary celebration at the National Mustard Museum.
If you've been waiting for the kind of fall weekend that shows off what living in Madison actually feels like, this is the one. The Badgers host USC under the lights at Camp Randall on Saturday, the Wisconsin Science Festival runs all weekend, and Sunday turns the Near West Side into one big Halloween block party. I went through the full Destination Madison calendar for October 23 to 25 and pulled the events I would send my own clients to, whether you've lived here for decades or you're visiting to see if Madison is the right fit.
All Weekend Long
Wisconsin Science Festival. This one runs daily through Sunday with hands-on events across Madison and the surrounding area, and a lot of it is free. If you have kids who ask "why" forty times a day, this is your weekend.
Halloween fall fun just outside the city. Enchanted Valley Acres in Cross Plains is the easy, family-friendly pick for pumpkins and fall activities. If your crew wants an actual scare, Terror at Tyrol runs at Tyrol Basin in Mount Horeb, and Cave of the Mounds in Blue Mounds is hosting Brave the Cave after dark along with its guided blacklight tours. Living in Dane County means all three of these are a short drive from almost any neighborhood in town.
Portraits of Service. The exhibit honoring Wisconsin veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam is open downtown through the end of the year, and it is a meaningful hour to spend before lunch on the Square.
Friday, October 23
Friday night is a good one to start early. The Classic Wisconsin Fish Fry and Book Signing on the Near East Side is about as Wisconsin as a Friday gets, and the Afro-Cuban All Stars are playing on campus if you want live music after dinner.
Downtown, Manual Cinema's "Frankenstein" brings live shadow puppetry and film together for a show that feels made for October. If hockey is more your speed, the Madison Capitols host the Waterloo Black Hawks in Middleton on Friday and again Saturday.
For something low-key, the Annual Fall Pottery Sale on the East Side and the Fitchburg Library Used Book Sale are both great places to wander, and the Madison College Free Fall Concert Series continues on the North Side.
Saturday, October 24: Game Day
Saturday starts where most good Madison Saturdays do, at the Dane County Farmers' Market on the Capitol Square. The market runs outdoors through November 14, so there are only a few Saturdays left to grab cheese curds and apple cider while you walk the loop.
It's also a big Badgers game day. Wisconsin hosts USC at Camp Randall with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff, which means the whole city spends the afternoon leaning toward campus. The Gameday Your Way: Regent Street Fan Fest and the free C4 Fully Charged Tailgate near campus are the places to be before kickoff. If you'd rather skip the parking hunt, Liberty Station is running a gameday shuttle and tailgate from the South Side.
Over in Middleton, the National Mustard Museum celebrates its 40th anniversary. If you're new to the area, this is one of those only-in-Madison stops that tells you a lot about the sense of humor around here. While you're in Middleton, the Autumn Artisan Faire at The Bruce Company is perfect for early holiday shopping, and the Haunted Hustle gets the runners out in costume.
Saturday night has something for everyone. Forward Madison FC takes on Union Omaha at Breese Stevens Field, Annie is on stage downtown, and Candlelight: A Haunted Evening of Halloween Classics fills a downtown venue with candlelit Halloween music. Families can head to Zoo Halloween Trivia on the Near West Side, and music lovers should check out Dan's World Music Fest on the West Side.
If you're a design and architecture person like me, make the drive to Spring Green for Jazz and Modernism: Architecture as Frozen Music with Ben and Leo Sidran, a Madison music family.
Sunday, October 25: Halloween on the Near West Side
Sunday is the day for families. Hilldale-O-Ween brings trick-or-treating to Hilldale, and the Near West Side also has the Boo Walk and the 11th Annual Halloween Tricks and Treats Scramble. If your dog loves a costume more than your kids do, the Howl-O-Ween Dog Costume Contest in Verona is the one for you.
For something a little calmer, the Full Moon Hike with Outdoor UW ends with hot cocoa, the Fitchburg Seasonal Wreath Making Workshop gets your front door ready for the season, and Delectable on the Near West Side is hosting a family-friendly Halloween treats cooking class.
Sunday is also a great day to see one of Madison's architectural landmarks. Tours of Frank Lloyd Wright's Unitarian Meeting House in Shorewood Hills run on Sundays through December, and if you've never been inside, it is worth the hour. The Capitol Square walking food tours are another easy way to show out-of-town guests around.
Wrap up the weekend in Middleton with the Cheese Raffle Fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Association, hosted with 3 Sheeps Brewing and Carr Valley Cheese.
Why Weekends Like This Matter When You're Choosing Where to Live
When I work with relocation clients, I always tell them to spend a weekend here like a local before they make a decision, because a weekend tells you more than any listing can. Notice how the Near West Side fills up on a Sunday like this one, how quickly you can get from Middleton to Breese Stevens, or how close Mount Horeb and Cross Plains feel when you live on the west side of town. You don't know what you don't know until you've lived a Madison weekend, and that's exactly the kind of detail I help my clients think through when they're comparing neighborhoods.
If you're thinking about a move to Madison or a move-up within Dane County and want to talk through which neighborhood fits your weekends, please reach out. I'm always happy to share what I know.
